Back in 2004, if you had asked school-leaver Alex Greig what chance he had of one day being an award-winning British entrepreneur business owner, he probably would have said next to no chance at all. A football crazy, wannabe-DJ at 18 - this TWGSB alum had no idea of what he wanted to do. All he did know was that he wouldnt be signing up for any university or a 9-5 corporate career. Beyond that, he was pretty indifferent.
Fast forward to 2025 and Alex Greig has today captured a niche in the UK market with his own amazing creation: Fuggles Beer Cafe.
This much-loved local pub offers one of the biggest selections of beers in the country, including regular and rotating guest ales, lagers, darks and pales, cask and keg ciders as well as a variety of spirits and wines. Better still Alex has imbued within his company things he holds dear - so it is child and dog friendly too! The success of Fuggles says a lot about the man behind the brand, who gave time of day recently to return to TWGSB for the first time since leaving these gates 21 years ago. He even surprised himself, he admitted, by feeling the warmth of reconnection with this space that helped form his teenage years.
Chatting with Alex he recalled happy and not-so-happy times back then, all of which he acknowledges have led him to business success today. 'I may not have liked a lot of the subjects I had to do, but today I draw a lot on the principles they taught me. My role is varied daily from supply chain management to PR to HR to accounting and more. I'm grateful for all TWGSB taught me' Alex shared in an interview we will share in the near future.
Above all, chatting with him, I saw that recurrent TWGSB humility shine through yet again, the same I've seen chatting with at least half a dozen alum visitors to the campus since I arrived in January. Alex doesnt take credit for the good life that has followed him, instead he takes accountability for the good and less-good parts of his life that have brought him to this level of success. He's not even comfortable seeing himself as 'a success' but rather as a 'work-in-progress', even as the accolades keep rolling in.
Looking forward, Alex hopes to partner with the school in social and community-focused ways. So to all alums wanting to attend next April's reunion dinner, get ready to meet Alex and his beers.
