Completing my Gold DofE award has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my time at school. It required a level of independence, resilience, and teamwork that I had never experienced before.

For my volunteering, I used my prefect and Head Student work at TWGSB. For my physical, I committed to a gym plan, and for my skill, I learned how to play the guitar. I really loved learning the guitar as it allowed me to reconnect with my old teacher and gave me a great way to unwind and take a break from revision during A-Levels!

For my residential, I learned how to sail a yacht with The Morning Star Trust. This was a fantastic experience where we sailed along the south coast and the Isle of Wight. Through it, I had the opportunity to meet some amazing people and gained memories that I don’t think will ever leave me. Handily, I also came away with my Competent Crew qualification from the Royal Yachting Association—an important step towards my yacht licence.

For my expedition, I went to the Brecon Beacons with a group of friends from school. Plagued with injuries and setbacks from the very start, it had the potential to be a very ugly week. We only became surer of that when, on the last day of our practice, a huge storm rolled in, raining all day and night. Despite all these factors, there is not a doubt in my mind that if the opportunity ever presented itself again, I would leap at it. I had a fantastic time, and it strengthened friendships that I reckon will last a lifetime.

Gold DofE has been monumental for my personal success. The sections have taught me many skills, namely leadership and perseverance. Just after my expedition, I was working towards getting elected as Head Boy. I truly believe that without the experiences I gained through DofE, I would not have been successful in my role.

I believe DofE is one of the best experiences that a young person can be a part of. It teaches endurance, leadership, and teamwork, as well as nurturing critical thinking skills. I can tell you now that when you are sitting on the side of a mountain, cold and wet, trying to work out where you are, your brain really starts working! To anyone considering doing it, or to anyone who is partway through, I cannot recommend completing your Duke of Edinburgh's Award enough.
