Tommy Monckton - Insurance Audit Senior Manager at Deloitte
Here is some of his presentation to our Sixth Form:
‘I grew up in Tunbridge Wells and came to TWGSB following my dad and preceding my brother who are also both alumni of the school.
In sixth form, whilst thinking about post school opportunities, I realised university wasn't for me so following my A-levels, I decided against university.
Instead, I joined Deloitte, completing their apprenticeship programme and gaining an ACA qualification.
I'm still with Deloitte today where I am an auditor, specifically working with insurance companies.
My main reasons for taking this apprenticeship route were because I was unsure of the financial commitment of university and the fact I learn much better through practical, on-the-job experience rather than in a classroom.
In September 2017 I began my Level 7-degree apprenticeship with Deloitte (the 'BrightStart apprenticeship'), qualifying as an ACA chartered accountant in September 2021.
I still keep a close friendship group all of whom I met at the school.
I am grateful to TWGSB for so much that I felt I wanted to come back and share my experiences with the students who now sit where I once sat.
If my talk helps just one student, it has been time well spent.’

Thanks Tommy for your time given!
Tommy replied as follows:
‘It was a pleasure and a privilege to head back through the gates of Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys this week – a place I have not visited since I picked up my A-level results back in 2017!
I had a fantastic opportunity to speak with current students about their post-school options, sharing my experiences as an apprentice since leaving school and providing them with more context on apprenticeships as an alternative pathway to university.
A key message I wanted to convey was the incredible value of apprenticeships from my experience. It's a path that has allowed me to kickstart my career early, gain practical skills whilst earning and has ultimately been instrumental in shaping both myself and my career development.
It was brilliant to see so many students engaged and asking insightful questions as they also consider this option. I hope my story encourages them to explore all avenues available, especially the dynamic world of apprenticeships, as they plan their futures.
Thank you to everyone involved at TWGSB who helped make this day possible, I had a very rewarding time.’
